Question 7993

During emergency braking, how must you act?

  1. By not pressing the clutch at any point during braking, in any case.
  2. Differently depending on whether my vehicle has conventional brakes or is equipped with ABS.
  3. The same way whether my vehicle has conventional brakes or is equipped with ABS.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Differently depending on whether my vehicle has conventional brakes or is equipped with ABS.

The technique changes depending on whether the car has ABS. With ABS, press the brake pedal all the way down and hold it there until you stop, even if it vibrates. Without ABS, that pressure can lock the wheels, so adjust it and, if they lock, ease off a little without releasing the pedal completely. With a manual transmission, also press the clutch: at the same time as the brake if you have ABS, and just before stopping if you do not.
