Question 7768

What precaution must every driver take to reduce the risk of striking pedestrians?

  1. Back up without looking in the rearview mirror or turning your head.
  2. Speed up when near pedestrians who are distracted while talking on a cell phone.
  3. Take extra care when passing a bus that is stopped at its bus stop.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Take extra care when passing a bus that is stopped at its bus stop.

A bus stopped at its stop hides anyone crossing in front of it, and someone who has just gotten off may step out suddenly. As you pass it, slow down, leave space and watch the area in front of it. In the picture, the gray passenger car is approaching the stopped bus while a man uses the crosswalk in front of it. Speeding up near distracted pedestrians or backing up without looking does exactly the opposite.
