Question 6961

Which vehicles are allowed to travel side by side on the shoulder, in a column of two, when it is usable?

  1. Bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles.
  2. All vehicles that are two-wheeled by design.
  3. Bicycles.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Bicycles.

Only bicycles. Other vehicles using the shoulder must travel one behind another, so the two mopeds riding side by side in the picture are doing it wrong. Motorcycles travel on the roadway and must ride in single file wherever they are allowed to use the shoulder. Bicycles must switch to single file between sunset and sunrise, on sections with no visibility, when they obstruct traffic, or when visibility is greatly reduced.
