Question 6085

On a road outside a built-up area that does not have a pedestrian area, as a general rule, on which side must pedestrians walk?

  1. On their left or on their right, interchangeably.
  2. On their left.
  3. On their right.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: On their left.

On their left. Outside built-up areas, when there is no pedestrian area, pedestrians must use the left shoulder or, if there is none, the roadway, facing approaching vehicles. This lets them see vehicles coming and move out of the way in time. In the image, the man is walking on his left, along the edge of a road without a shoulder. Keeping right is an exception, for example for safety reasons, and is not a matter of personal choice.
