Question 5573

How are you required to pass a cyclist when driving on a roadway that has two lanes for each direction of traffic?

  1. By occupying all of the adjacent lane.
  2. By occupying part or all of the adjacent lane.
  3. By occupying part of the lanes intended for traffic in the opposite direction.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: By occupying all of the adjacent lane.

With two lanes in your direction, you must move completely into the adjacent lane to pass a cyclist; using only part of it is not enough. With one lane in each direction, you must instead use as much of the oncoming lane as necessary to leave at least 1.5 meters of clearance. Entering the lanes for oncoming traffic is not the correct way to pass when there are two lanes in your direction.
