Question 5544

May a personal mobility vehicle (VMP) travel on a road outside a built-up area?

  1. Yes, on any road that has a sufficiently wide shoulder.
  2. No, they may only travel on urban roads and road sections through built-up areas (travesías).
  3. No.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: No.

No, as a general rule. You must not ride a personal mobility vehicle on freeways (autopistas) or high-capacity divided highways (autovías). On other roads outside built-up areas, you may only use cycle routes, such as a bike lane or a shared cycling and walking path, or roads closed to motor vehicles, provided no sign prohibits it. Having a shoulder makes no difference, and road sections through built-up areas (travesías) are also prohibited.
