Question 5434

What lighting must a vehicle traveling in a lane carrying the normal direction of traffic have turned on when the adjacent lane is open to traffic moving in the opposite direction to the usual one?

  1. None, although it must travel at a maximum speed of 60 km/h.
  2. Low-beam headlights, at least.
  3. Low beams, but only between sunset and sunrise.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Low-beam headlights, at least.

If you drive in the normal-direction lane right next to a lane opened to traffic in the opposite direction from usual, you must keep at least your low beams on, day and night, regardless of how many lanes there are in your direction. The speed depends on those lanes. If only one remains, you must travel between 60 and 80 km/h; if you have two or more, the road's normal limits apply. That is why the option saying you need no lights and must limit your speed to 60 is incorrect.
