Question 4611

You are driving in a lane and above it there is a traffic light showing a red X; what must you do?

  1. Leave the lane as soon as possible, because driving in that lane is prohibited.
  2. Brake at the traffic light as if it were a circular red light.
  3. Reduce your speed due to special traffic circumstances.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Leave the lane as soon as possible, because driving in that lane is prohibited.

A red X on a lane-control signal prohibits using the lane directly below it. If you are already in that lane, you must move into an open lane as soon as you can do so safely, yielding to traffic in that lane. In the image, the two lanes on the left have red Xs and those on the right have green arrows. Simply braking when you reach the signal or driving more slowly is not enough.
