Question 4342

When there is ice on the road, how should you drive?

  1. At a very moderate speed so you do not have to brake.
  2. By pressing the brake pedal intermittently.
  3. With one foot pressing the clutch pedal.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: At a very moderate speed so you do not have to brake.

Ice leaves tires with almost no grip, and braking distance can increase to as much as ten times its usual length. Drive slowly enough and anticipate far enough ahead that you do not need to brake. If you brake, do it very gently, because jabbing the pedal, even intermittently, can lock the wheels. Resting your foot on the clutch does not give you any grip.
