Question 4323

When does the turn signal give you the right-of-way?

  1. When you want to change lanes and you switch it on before the vehicles behind you.
  2. When you leave a parking area to merge into traffic.
  3. When you signal a right turn at an intersection.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: When you want to change lanes and you switch it on before the vehicles behind you.

Turning on your turn signal announces what you are going to do, but generally does not give you the right-of-way. One exception concerns the vehicle ahead in your lane: if its driver has already signaled that they are moving to one side, drivers behind who want to move to the same side must respect that vehicle's right-of-way. In the image, the gray passenger car ahead already has its left turn signal on, so you let it move out first. When turning or pulling out of a parking space, your turn signal does not give you any right-of-way.
