Question 3801

As a general rule, outside a built-up area, on which side of the road must pedestrians walk?

  1. On their left.
  2. On their right.
  3. If there is a shoulder, on either their right or their left.
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: On their left.

Outside a built-up area, if there is no pedestrian area, pedestrians must walk on the left shoulder or, if there is no shoulder, on the roadway, as far from cars as possible. Walking on their left lets them face approaching vehicles. Keeping right is an exception, for example for safety reasons, and having a shoulder does not mean they can choose either side.
